3.1 for 31 days
March 1, 2020 I launched my second wellness program under Odyssey Lifestyle Wellness Group. 3.1 for 31 is a cardio-based program focusing on dedication. It concentrates on giving you something to dedicate yourself to without there being any reason to say ‘tomorrow’, ‘next week’, ‘next month’ or ‘next year’! The program leaves little to no room for error or disappointment. It’s either you commit or you don’t.
With 3.1 for 31 there’s a clear start date and a clear end date. There is no room for confusion or excuses. The program in itself is simple. Each month of the year that holds 31 days you are responsible for running or walking 3.1 miles. That is a 5K a day every single day for 31 days. There is no requirement of indoor vs outdoor; just show up for yourself and get it done! We aren’t making excuses for weather or gym closure.
In the program there are two different tracks:
Track One is five days out of the week you RUN a 5K and two days out of the week you WALK a 5K. That’s seven days of movement – five days running two days walking. Of course for a challenge you can run the full week.
Track Two you WALK five days a week and RUN two days a week. There is no specific order in which you walk or run. There is no calendar – you decide when to walk / run and you hold yourself accountable. Again, no specific order! Modify to all walking if you need to but please challenge yourself.
I made sure to create two different tracks for people who are and /or may not be athletically inclined. Also, to give the body a break when needed without feeling like you’re cheating yourself. March 1 – 31 was the trial month of the program. Me and a couple of people went through the full month just trying to track what all could go wrong and how we remedied the issues.
My personal findings were as such: Week one I ran five days and walked two days. Week two I ran five days and walked two days. *Toward the end of week two I developed shinsplints so I had to take it easy going forward. I ended up forcing myself to slow down!* Week three I walked four days and only ran three days. (felt crappy about it) Week four I walked – the shinsplints were excruciating by that point!
The month FLEW by and by the time it was over I was truly sad about it. I gained so much from getting outside everyday and pushing myself and my body. I recognize the pressure I was putting on my legs by running on cement every day. That mixed with old running shoes was a setup for shinsplints. Honestly, I did not do everything I should have done to heal myself on my down week. I should have iced my legs more and had them elevated but me and stubbornness have a love affair that ends in pain and misery each time. Luckily I have 5 more months this year to get it right! I know what I have to do in order to meet my goals going forward.
I can sum it up by saying PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!
